Site updated 3rd July 2007
Welcome to my mushrooming website! Here you will find information about the fungus forays I run and other mushroomy news. If you have been on one of my forays then check here for pictures of the day and details of some of the more interesting finds.
I love receiving pictures of mushrooms so if you find anything unusual or simply want to check the identity of something please email me and I will do my best. When it comes to identifying fungi it is all a matter of detail so do send me as good a picture as you can and make sure that the top and bottom are visible even if this requires two pictures.
I have now posted all the foray dates I have for this year. Most are with various organisations in the south-west of England but I hope to run one or two forays of my own - go to the John's Forays page for details.
The River Cottage Mushroom Handbook, which I have been working on for the past year, is due out on the 3rd September! It will be available from the River Cottage website and you can even pre-order it from Amazon. Of course it will also be available from most book shops. There will also be a DVD - the provisional title is "River Cottage Mushroom Magic" - which I think will come out at about the same time. More details of these later.

Try this link to the BBC web site which contains a follow-up article and interview after my brief appearance on Radio Solent a couple of years ago.
If you want an idea of what a fungus foray is like here is an article by Julia Hailes who accompanied me on a rather wet October afternoon.
*Please e-mail me if you visit this site - it is very nice to get some feedback.

This is a typical foray day at the Kingcombe Centre - all our finds layed out on the table with their names underneath.
Below is Pluteus leoninus found at Ham Hill in Somerset. This is the prettiest toadstool of 2006 and was sat there at exactly the right angle for a good photograph. It is a Red Data List species usually found on extremely rotten ash stumps.
